Ghost in the Shell: Why the Anime Has Only Ten Episodes

The TV series The Ghost in the Shell was originally supposed to have twelve episodes. In an interview published on November 5, 2026 with Anime!Anime!, director Mokochan explains why the team ultimately reduced the scope to ten episodes: the adaptation was meant to stay as close as possible to Masamune Shirow's manga instead of adding additional original storylines.

Why twelve episodes became ten

While working on the scripts, the production team found that the material of the manga source was not enough to fill the originally planned twelve episodes in the desired form. Additional story sections written specifically for the anime, or a shorter season, were up for discussion. Mokochan advocated for the second solution. This decision was made together with the other people responsible.

The series, which premiered on July 7, 2026, is Mokochan's first directorial work. Science SARU produced the anime, Toh EnJoe wrote the scripts, and Shuhei Handa handled the character design. A further Ghost in the Shell production from Science SARU has since been announced. It is an independent project and should not be equated with the completed ten-episode TV series.

Visuals and voice cast follow the manga

Mokochan describes Shirow's source as a narrative in which, alongside the plot, marginal notes, philosophical reflections and humorous moments contribute to the effect. These elements were not to be dropped in favor of a simplified anime story. The characters were therefore drawn entirely by hand; according to the director, computer graphics were used in part only for objects and machines. The style also draws on the visual language of Science SARU, which has also worked on Dandadan.

The director also explains the recasting of the lead roles. Initially, a return of earlier voice actors was under consideration. After the death of Atsuko Tanaka, the longtime Japanese voice of Motoko Kusanagi, negotiations were restarted. Akio Otsuka, who had voiced Batou in earlier adaptations, recommended Hiroki Yasumoto and Yuichi Nakamura for Batou and Togusa respectively. The role of Motoko went to Maaya Sakamoto, who can also be heard in other anime projects, including the new Madoka Magica film.

The series has been released internationally via Prime Video. For Japan, a Blu-ray box with all ten episodes is also announced for December 23, 2026. The interview thus documents not only the decision about the number of episodes but also the deliberate return to Shirow's original manga aesthetic.
