The 20th-anniversary exhibition on Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu runs until August 30, 2026 at Sunshine City in Ikebukuro and explores both the making of the anime series and its cultural impact. A current exhibition report shows numerous production materials, rebuilt locations, and retrospectives on the franchise’s development since the 2006 TV broadcast.

The exhibition is titled “SOS展~世界を大いに盛り上げた涼宮ハルヒの展~” and is divided into two main sections. “Suzumiya Haruhi no Tsuioku” takes visitors chronologically through the series’ history. On display are, among other things, character and scene materials, storyboards, recording scripts, and illustrations by Kyoto Animation. In addition, there are rebuilt locations such as the classroom and the clubroom of the SOS Brigade.

The tour covers not only the episodes broadcast in 2006 but also the episodes added in 2009 and the film The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. “Endless Eight” receives particularly detailed attention: the exhibition places identical scenes from different loops side by side and makes differences in clothing, staging, and visual composition visible.

From anime to cultural phenomenon

The second section, “Suzumiya Haruhi no Gensho,” addresses the series’ influence on anime and internet culture. Topics include character songs, video platforms, pilgrimages to real-world locations, and the spread of the “Hare Hare Yukai” dance. A storyboard of the ending sequence is also on view; visitors can record the dance themselves in front of a replica clubroom set.

The Haruhi exhibition thus follows a trend of major anniversary retrospectives, as aninew.de recently covered with the 20th-anniversary exhibition for Hetalia and the anniversary exhibition for My Hero Academia.

The “SOS” exhibition is open daily from August 10 to 30, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Sunshine City, Exhibition Hall D. Regular admission costs 2,500 yen. The official exhibition team notes that parts of the tour may not be photographed.
