Studio Khara celebrates 20 years since the Evangelion reboot
The animation studio was founded to coincide with the start of production on the Rebuild of Evangelion film series.

Studio Khara celebrates its 20th anniversary on September 15, 2026. The animation studio of the company Khara, led by Hideaki Anno, was established on September 15, 2006, when production began on the film series "Evangelion: New Theatrical Edition."
As Anime!Anime! reports, the company Khara had already been founded on May 17, 2006. The name means "joy" in Greek; the handwritten design of the company and studio logo comes from Moyoco Anno. For the company's 20th anniversary in May, Khara published a new illustration by director and animator Kazuya Tsurumaki along with a message from Hideaki Anno.
From Evangelion to Gundam
Studio Khara is primarily associated with the new Evangelion film series. The fourth and final film, "Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time," premiered in Japanese cinemas in 2021. In the following years, Khara was also involved in "Shin Ultraman" from 2022 and "Shin Kamen Rider" from 2023, for which Anno took on central creative roles.
In 2025, Khara worked with Sunrise for the first time and co-produced "Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX," directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki. The Gundam franchise continues to move forward beyond that: a further new TV series, Gundam XARX-ZERO, has already been announced for April 2027.
Further projects already announced
In June 2026, Khara confirmed its involvement in "BAAHUBALI: THE ETERNAL WAR PART 1." Studios from India, France and Great Britain are contributing to this international feature production; Studio Khara is handling part of the animation, and Mahiro Maeda is part of the main team.
In parallel, a completely new Evangelion series has been announced. According to the information published so far, Kazuya Tsurumaki and Toko Yatabe are directing, while Studio Khara and CloverWorks handle the animation. CloverWorks is currently also working on other major film projects, including Pokémon: Wildcard, announced for 2027.
A specific date or further production details for the new Evangelion series were not mentioned in the sources evaluated for this report.
