Girls Band Cry: New Theatrical Film Opens May 21, 2027
Toei Animation has unveiled a new teaser poster and a film teaser for a standalone sequel to the music anime series.

Girls Band Cry: The Movie opens on May 21, 2027 in Japanese cinemas. On November 3, Toei Animation released a new teaser poster, a first film teaser and details about the plot. Unlike the two 2025 theatrical compilations, the film tells a new story about the band Togenashi Togeari.
Togenashi Togeari Goes on Tour
The story picks up two months after the five musicians left their agency. Nina Iseri, Momoka Kawaragi, Subaru Awa, Tomo Ebizuka and Rupa are once again earning their living through part-time jobs, but they continue to make music together. Their former manager, Miura, reaches out with a tour plan that had already been prepared before the end of the partnership.
Nina expands the plan with ever more performances. What was originally a manageable tour grows into a journey with concerts at 50 venues across Japan. The story thus builds on the band's decision to continue their own music independently of a major agency.
The new film is not another recap of the TV series. The two earlier theatrical films, Seishun Kyosokyoku and Naa, Mirai., had already adapted the original anime story for the big screen in 2025.
Teaser, Production and German Release
This video will only connect to YouTube once you play it.
Kazuo Sakai returns as director, and Jukki Hanada is responsible for the screenplay. The character designs come from Nari Teshima, and music production is handled by Kenji Tamai. The band members' voice actors are also back: Rina voices Nina, and Yuri takes on Momoka. Toei handles the Japanese film distribution.
In Japan, advance sales for the first cinema ticket edition begin on November 6, 2026. The announcement did not mention a German cinema release. The TV series is already available in Germany on Crunchyroll; a release date for this new film in German-speaking regions has yet to be announced.
With Girls Band Cry, another music anime receives a new theatrical story. Bocchi the Rock! is also getting a prequel film, while BanG Dream! MyGO!!!!! and Ave Mujica continue their band stories as anime.
In addition, the official project confirms a stage adaptation from March 21 to 28, 2027 at the Sunshine Theatre in Tokyo. One day earlier, on March 20, the real-life band Togenashi Togeari performs at K-Arena Yokohama.
