The "Satoshi Kon Birthday Festival 2026" brings five works by the director back to two cinemas in Tokyo from 9 to 12 October. As KAI-YOU reports and HUMAX has officially confirmed, the Ikebukuro HUMAX Cinemas and the Shibuya HUMAX Cinema will show four feature films and the TV series "Paranoia Agent". Talks with cast and staff are planned for three screenings.

Five Works Over Four Days

The festival opens on 9 October with a late-night complete screening of "Paranoia Agent" in Ikebukuro. Before the screening, Mamiko Noto and Haruko Momoi, who voice Tsukiko Sagi and Maromi in the series respectively, will speak.

On 10 October, "Perfect Blue", "Millennium Actress" and "Tokyo Godfathers" follow. For "Perfect Blue", voice actress Junko Iwao and screenwriter Sadayuki Murai are announced to appear after the screening. The film runs in its 4K-remastered version and is rated 15+ in Japan. "Millennium Actress" is shown as a 4K digital remaster, "Tokyo Godfathers" likewise as a 4K remaster.

On 12 October, Satoshi Kon's birthday, "Paprika" is on the programme at the Shibuya HUMAX Cinema. After the screening, a talk with Megumi Hayashibara is planned; she voices Paprika and Atsuko Chiba. Although several films exist in 4K-remastered versions, HUMAX points out that both cinemas will project the screenings in 2K.

Tickets From 11 September

For the regular screenings of "Millennium Actress" and "Tokyo Godfathers", a ticket costs 1,700 yen. The three event screenings with talks cost 3,500 yen each. Presale for HUMAX members begins on 11 September at 10 p.m., general sales on 12 September at midnight.

Cinemas in Japan are currently relying more often on restored re-releases of older anime films. Most recently, for example, Cowboy Bebop: The Movie was announced as a 4K remaster. A further look at the long-term afterlife of individual directors can be found in the tenth anniversary of "Your Name.".

The festival runs exclusively in Tokyo. A comparable event for Germany has not yet been announced.
