Bass X Machina: Six episodes premiere on Netflix

Studio Mir is animating a steampunk Western inspired by the life of the historical lawman Bass Reeves.

Bass X Machina has been available on Netflix since November 3, 2026. The six-part animated series from Studio Mir blends a Western with steampunk, giant machines and supernatural dangers. All six episodes were released simultaneously at launch.

Bass Reeves in an altered Western world

At the center is Bass, a family man and lawman in a fictional version of the American West. Outlaws, mechanical war machines and supernatural opponents make the region a dangerous place. To protect his family, Bass simultaneously takes on the roles of judge, jury and executioner. His decisions, however, also endanger the people he fights for.

The story is inspired by the life of the historical US Marshal Bass Reeves, but does not develop from it a traditional biography. In the official Netflix teaser, the main character fights with a mechanical arm against heavily armed opponents, a steel bull and enormous robots. The series thus combines Western motifs with science fiction and fantasy.

Studio Mir, voice cast and music

The animation comes from South Korean studio Mir. Netflix classifies the internationally produced series under its anime programming and describes it as a production that draws on anime visual language. The executive producers include LeSean Thomas, Brian Tyree Henry, Jennifer Wiley-Moxley and Chad Handley.

Brian Tyree Henry also voices the lead character Bass in English. Janelle Monáe voices Glory and contributes the title song "Honor Killing." Other roles are voiced by, among others, Tati Gabrielle as Dana, Cree Summer as Ahni and Chaske Spencer as Lighthorse. The original music is by Roman GianArthur and Nate Wonder.

Official teaser and streaming launch

Netflix had already presented the release date and teaser on August 21 at Anime NYC. The video shows the violent steampunk world and the conflict between Bass' duty as a lawman and his responsibility to his family.

This video will only connect to YouTube once you play it.

With Bass X Machina, Netflix is expanding its offering of animated series for adults. In November, the Sunrise and Shaft-produced manga anime Fool Night also follows there. Already at the end of October, the three Mononoke anime films with German audio joined the lineup.

The six episodes of Bass X Machina are also available on Netflix in Germany.
