Netflix and SEGA plan a new Sonic series and a Crazy Taxi film
The partnership covers several SEGA brands; STRANGER THAN HEAVEN is also set to be adapted as a live-action film.
Netflix and SEGA have announced a new partnership to adapt several game franchises. The package includes a new animated series based on "Sonic the Hedgehog", a live-action film of "Crazy Taxi" and a live-action adaptation of "STRANGER THAN HEAVEN".
Netflix and SEGA confirmed the collaboration in a joint statement dated 14 September 2026. Anime!Anime! picked up the announcement on 15 September. The three projects named so far cover different formats: live-action comedy, children's animation and live-action action film.
New Sonic series aimed at younger viewers
According to Netflix, the new "Sonic the Hedgehog" series is currently in development. Carlos Stevens and Toru Nakahara are working on the project. In content terms, the series is to show Sonic and his friends as a team of heroes and is aimed at preschool and early school-age children. No premiere date, episode count or further production details have been announced yet.
Netflix also points to "Sonic Prime", whose three seasons are already available on the service. The newly announced production, however, is a separate new series.
The partnership opens with "Crazy Taxi". The arcade game, released in 1999, is being adapted as a live-action comedy. Dan Gregor and Doug Mand are writing the screenplay; Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher and Toru Nakahara are producing. In parallel, the new game "Crazy Taxi: World Tour" has been announced for 2027.
"STRANGER THAN HEAVEN" by RGG Studio is also to be realised as a live-action film. Netflix has not yet disclosed further details.
The collaboration fits into the expansion of Netflix's animation offering. Recently, aninew.de reported, among other things, on the Netflix anime film THE RIBBON HERO and its new voice cast and on the later two-week cinema run of THE RIBBON HERO in Japan.
