Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO: Theatrical Release on January 15, 2027

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO opens in Japanese theaters on January 15, 2027. Bandai Namco Filmworks announced the date on October 9, together with a trailer, the teaser visual, and details on the story, cast, and production. The anime film tells a prequel story to Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM from 2024.
Shinn Asuka Takes Center Stage
The story is set in Cosmic Era 74, after the collapse of the Destiny Plan proposed by Gilbert Durandal. While Cagalli Yula Athha pushes forward the founding of the peacekeeping organization COMPASS, Shinn Asuka searches for his new purpose. Then the Strike Freedom Gundam is stolen from a transport by an unknown party. Shinn and his allies must retrieve the machine and prevent an escalation.
The film thus bridges the narrative gap between the TV series Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny and the later-set SEED FREEDOM. The screenplay draft was already developed during the development of the 2024 theatrical film.
The official trailer features, among others, Shinn and Kira Yamato, the new conflict, and battles between Mobile Suits. The key visual places Shinn in front of a red-tinted backdrop, with Kira and Athrun Zala visible behind him.

Returning Voice Actors and New Mobile Suits
Kenichi Suzumura returns as Shinn Asuka. The Japanese cast also includes Maaya Sakamoto as Lunamaria Hawke, Soichiro Hoshi as Kira Yamato, Akira Ishida as Athrun Zala, and Houko Kuwashima as Agnes Giebenrath. Daisuke Ono voices Leonard Valway, who previously appeared in a supplementary narrative to SEED FREEDOM and is now seen animated for the first time.
Mitsuo Fukuda directs. Chiaki Morosawa, Shigeru Morita, and Fukuda were involved in the screenplay. Hisashi Hirai is responsible for character design and chief animation direction; the production is handled by Sunrise. Alongside familiar machines, the Gouf Ignited Custom is also set to appear in the film.
International Theatrical Plans
For North America, Bandai Namco Filmworks has already announced a theatrical release in February 2027. The company has not yet named a German or European release date.
Shortly before the Japanese premiere, the production will be represented at the GUNDAM-Con 2027 with two stage programs. In addition, another TV production, Gundam XARX-ZERO, has been announced for April 2027.
