MIX DUNK: Otome Game Explains Basketball and the Ban on Romance
Otomate explains in a new interview how the basketball club Kawasaki Brave Thunders and AKB48 shaped the Switch game.

Developer Otomate has released new insights into the making of the otome game MIX DUNK – KING OF BASKETBALL. In an interview with Anime!Anime!, the development team, the basketball club Kawasaki Brave Thunders and people involved with AKB48 explain why the main character stands on the court herself and why romantic relationships within the team are forbidden. The game releases on November 26, 2026 for the Nintendo Switch in Japan.
A Basketball Player Rather Than an Observer
The protagonist wants to become a professional basketball player. After her previous team dissolves, she applies to the club Kawasaki Brave Thunders, which competes in the fictional, co-ed Mix League. The story combines sporting competition with a romance storyline.
In the interview, Otomate explains that the project was inspired by the real basketball club. The main character was deliberately designed as an active player so that she experiences victories, defeats and conflicts together with the male characters. The ban on relationships within the team is meant to keep the plot focused on trust and performance at first, but it also creates conflicts for the romantic storylines.
A Real Club Advises the Development Team
According to its own statements, the Kawasaki Brave Thunders reviewed the depicted plays and game scenes. The development team was also allowed to visit training areas and other facilities. Some backgrounds in the game show real locations; sounds such as the squeaking of basketball shoes and the shouts in the arena are also meant to reflect everyday club life. The professional mixed league itself, however, is invented.
Momoka Hotei and Maho Omori from the AKB48 circle were also involved in the concept. The Japanese voice cast includes Chiharu Sawashiro, Junya Enoki, Takuma Terashima, Yoshiki Nakajima and Tomokazu Sugita. Besides the dialogue, the game features basketball mini-games and a function for looking up technical terms.
